March 2024. The Dencun upgrade goes live. Overnight, Arbitrum and Optimism fees drop from dollars to cents. Developers who built on L2s for years wake up to a new economic reality: blob space.
What Changed
EIP-4844 added a new transaction type carrying "blobs" — up to 128 KB of opaque data per blob, priced separately from calldata. Rollups post compressed batches here instead of stuffing them into expensive execution-layer calldata. The result: 90% lower marginal cost per transaction.
Blob Pricing Mechanics
Blobs use a dedicated gas market with its own base fee (EIP-1559 style). Target: 3 blobs per block (384 KB). Max: 6 blobs. When demand exceeds target, the blob base fee rises exponentially. At 6 blobs/block sustained, fees double every ~12 seconds.
How Rollups Pass Costs to Users
Rollups batch hundreds of L2 txs into one blob. They amortize the blob fee across all transactions in the batch. Formula varies:
| Rollup | Pricing Model | Typical L2 Fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum One | Fixed base + dynamic congestion | $0.001-$0.01 |
| Optimism | Base fee + priority fee | $0.002-$0.02 |
| Base | Dynamic base fee | $0.001-$0.015 |
| zkSync Era | Proof cost + blob amortization | $0.005-$0.03 |
2026 Capacity Upgrades
Pectra (Q1 2026) raises target to 6 blobs/block, max 9. PeerDAS (Q3 2026) introduces Data Availability Sampling, letting light clients verify blobs without downloading all data. This paves the way for 32 blobs/block — the first step toward full Danksharding.
""Proto-danksharding was the wedge. PeerDAS is the lever. Full danksharding is the destination."
— Dankrad Feist, Ethereum Foundation
Revenue Shifts
L1 execution-layer fee burn dropped 40% post-Dencun. Blob fees now contribute ~15% of total ETH burn. Rollup sequencers capture the spread between L2 fees paid and blob fees paid — a new revenue stream estimated at $200M+ annually across major rollups.
What Full Danksharding Changes
64 shards, each with 32 blobs/block. 16 MB/block data throughput. Blob fees approach zero for most use cases. Rollups compete on proving costs and UX, not data availability. DeFi traders see sub-cent swaps; on-chain games and social apps become viable.
Action Items for Developers
1. Migrate calldata-heavy contracts to blob submissions via EIP-4844 precompile (0x0a). 2. Implement dynamic fee estimation using eth_blobBaseFee RPC. 3. Monitor PeerDAS testnets (Holesky, Ephemery) for sampling integration. 4. Budget for blob fee variance in your treasury model.
✦
The blob market is young. Fees will swing. But the direction is clear: data availability is no longer the bottleneck. Build accordingly.
