Project 1: Floating Shelf with Hidden Bracket

This teaches layout, drilling, and finishing in one afternoon. Cut a 1x10 hardwood board to length (24–36 inches). Rip a 1x2 cleat to the same length. Drill 3/4-inch pocket holes in the cleat face. Mount the cleat to studs with 3-inch structural screws, level it, then slide the shelf over the cleat. Secure from underneath with 1-inch screws through the pocket holes. Sand through 120 to 220 grit. Finish with three coats of wipe-on polyurethane, sanding with 320 grit between coats. You just learned casework basics.

Project 2: Wall-Mounted Tool Cabinet

Build a shallow box (18x24x4 inches) from 1/2-inch Baltic birch plywood. Use pocket screws for the carcass. Cut a French cleat on the back: rip a 3-inch strip at 45 degrees, mount half to the wall, half to the cabinet. Hang it. Add pegboard inside the door for bits and drivers. Install a magnetic strip for drill bits. This project teaches sheet goods breakdown, joinery, and modular storage thinking.

Respect the kickback zone. On a circular saw, stand to the side of the blade line, never behind it. On a router, feed against the bit rotation (right to left on outside edges). Clamp your workpiece. Plywood grades: ACX has one good face, BCX has knots. Buy Baltic birch (BB/BB) for drawers and jigs — void-free cores hold screws. Lumber: S4S (surfaced four sides) costs more but saves hours of milling. For outdoor projects, use ground-contact rated PT lumber or cedar. Avoid furring strips for anything structural; they're warped, knotty, and dimensionally unstable.

The Jig Mindset

Stop measuring twice. Build a jig once. A crosscut sled for your table saw. A doweling jig for alignment. A pocket hole jig with a dust port. A tapering jig for table legs. Jigs trade setup time for repeatability. They turn 'I hope this fits' into 'this fits every time.' Start with a simple bench hook: three pieces of scrap, five minutes, and you have a safe sawing station that protects your bench and your fingers.
